The Slovak Film and Television Academy<\/a> decided to nominate the film Made in Ash<\/em> (A\u017e do mesta A\u0161<\/em>) by Iveta Gr\u00f3fov\u00e1 as the Slovak entry for the Best Foreign Language Film of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)<\/a> Awards, also known as the Oscars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

SFTA members selected the film from among 10 titles eligible for the nomination according to the criteria of the AMPAS – a feature-length film, with a public premiere between October 1, 2011 and September 30, 2012, theatrically distributed, the submitting coutry having the predominant number of authors and the original language being other than English:<\/p>\n

The Czech Film and Television Academy selected the David Ond\u0159\u00ed\u010dek newest film In the Shadow<\/em><\/strong> (Ve st\u00ednu, CZ, PL, SK, IL, 2012) as the Czech national nomination in the same category.<\/p>\n

The short film The Last Bus<\/strong><\/em> (dir. Ivana Lau\u010d\u00edkov\u00e1 & Martin Snopek, 2011) will be also competing for the golden statue. As the film received the Grand Prix awards at the prestigious festivals of short films in Tampere and animation film in Stuttgart, it qualified for the short animation category at the Oscars. Slovakia will be represented in the category for the first time, however a Slovak animation film\u00a0was presented for the competition in 2000, the director Michal Struss was nominated for a Student Oscar for his film In the Box<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

After graduating from high school, Dorotka leaves her native Slovakia to find work in the Czech border town of A\u0161. Upon arriving, she is immediately confronted with a world of jaded seamstresses all waiting for the arrival of their German princes. The film authentically depicts the mundane surroundings that Dorotka quickly becomesa part of and also reflects the girls\u2019 motives towards making harsh life altering decisions, which can seem immoral when looked at simply from the surface.<\/p>\n

Iveta Gr\u00f3fov\u00e1 <\/strong>(1980, Tren\u010d\u00edn)<\/p>\n

Graduated from the Faculty of Animated Film (2004) and the Faculty of Documentary Film (2009) at the Bratislava\u2019s Academy of Performing Arts. Directed short documentary At Least<\/em> <\/strong>(2003), The Politics of Quality<\/em><\/strong> (2005), Goodbye Party<\/em><\/strong> (2005), Guest Workers<\/em><\/strong> (2007) and the short animation There Was 11 of Us<\/em><\/strong> (2004). Made in Ash<\/em> <\/strong>is her debut fiction feature.<\/p>\n
