After the successful premiere edition in Melbourne in June 2013, the festival extends its program to also include Sydney. This year\u2019s edition will be an all-round cultural event focusing on the theme of resistance, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and the collapse of Communism in Europe. In addition, the Melbourne opening takes place on the symbolic date of August 21.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Melbourne<strong>:<\/strong> 21 \u2013 29 August, ACMI Cinemas, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square and Yarra Gallery<br \/>\nSydney<strong>:<\/strong> 2 \u2013 7 September, Dendy Newtown, University of Technology Sydney, and Conny Dietzschold Gallery<\/p>\n<p>The festival is the first and so far the only complex initiative to showcase Slovak and Czech cinema in Australia, and its program aim to present the best works of both the traditional archive cinema and recent film production. Within the second edition, Slovak cinema will be represented by three film classics from the period of 1960s, a collection of fiction and documentary films, as well as a collection of short films from the last three years.<\/p>\n<p>Slovak film classics, presented in their digitally restored versions from brand new DCP prints:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/dvd\/vtackovia-siroty-a-blazni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Birds, Orphans and Fools<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (dir. Juraj Jakubisko, CS 1969), made in direct reaction to the events of August 1968, a mosaic-like frolicsome parable taking place in an indefinite dimension of space and time, in a foolish universe without ideals \u2013 a world of violence, cynicism and hopelessness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/dvd\/boxer-a-smrt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Boxer and Death<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (dir. Peter Solan, CS 1962), is a unique adaptation of J\u00f3zef Hen\u00b4s novel, with deep human insight capturing the humiliating of people during fascist regime in concentration camps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/dvd\/kym-sa-skonci-tato-noc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Before Tonight Is Over<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (dir. Peter Solan, CS 1965) Solan\u00b4s masterpiece, in which the characters \u2013 by means of actors\u00b4 improvisation, used in Slovak cinema for the first time \u2013 gradually reveal unfulfilled dreams, illusions and disappointments of \u201caverage\u201d people of those times.<\/p>\n<p>Recent Slovak films in the programme:<br \/>\n<strong><em>Candidate<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Jon\u00e1\u0161 Kar\u00e1sek, SK-CZ 2013), Slovak box office hit of the last year.<a href=\"http:\/\/casffa.com.au\/event\/candidate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><strong><em>The Confidant<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Juraj Nvota, SK-CZ-PL 2011), a paranoid historical thriller is based on a true story.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Normalization<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Robert Kirchhoff, SK-CZ 2013), an investigative docuemntary looking into a controversial criminal and polotical case from 1970s reachind until today.<a href=\"http:\/\/casffa.com.au\/event\/normalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><strong><em>The Lyricist<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Arnold Kojnok, SK 2014), a thorough reflecttion of the post war situation till nowadays in Slovakia and the Czech Republic through the eyes of a respected historian J\u00e1n Mlyn\u00e1rik.<a href=\"http:\/\/casffa.com.au\/event\/lyricist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><strong><em>Velvet Terrorists<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Pavol Pekar\u010d\u00edk, Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd, Peter Kerekes, CK-CZ-HR 2013), a seriocomic documentary about three men who performed romantic, and perhaps somewhat foolhardy or inept, acts of guerrilla resistance under Normalization.<a href=\"http:\/\/casffa.com.au\/event\/velvet-terrorists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nSlovak shorts collection:<br \/>\n<strong><em>Homo ciris<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Jana Min\u00e1rikov\u00e1, SK 2013), about a man and his wish to become a fish.<br \/>\n<strong><em>Momo<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Teodor Kuhn, SK 2012), on the importance of having a father<br \/>\n<strong><em>The Pandas<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Mat\u00fa\u0161 Viz\u00e1r, SK-CZ 2013), Cinefondation 2013-awarded animation in which an interfering ape called the human being discovers the panda<br \/>\n<em><strong>Snow<\/strong> <\/em>(dir. Ivana \u0160ebestov\u00e1, SK-FR 2013), animation about a woman waiting for her love, a man who looks for a perfect snowflake<br \/>\n<strong><em>The Exhibition<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Peter Beg\u00e1nyi &amp; Andrej Kolen\u010d\u00edk, SK 2013) about stuffed animals coated in dust and three caretakers who themselves resemble exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>The Czech &amp; Slovak Film Festival was initiated and is organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casffa.com.au\/about-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia Inc.<\/a> (CaSFFA), its curator and director is Cerise Howard.
