{"id":37814,"date":"2014-10-24T09:35:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-24T07:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/?post_type=novinka&#038;p=37814"},"modified":"2025-07-31T11:46:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T09:46:59","slug":"slovak-films-in-ukraine-from-silent-to-contemporary","status":"publish","type":"novinka","link":"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/slovak-films-in-ukraine-from-silent-to-contemporary\/","title":{"rendered":"Slovak Films in Ukraine: from silent to contemporary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\">44th edition<\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\"> of <\/span><a style=\"font-size: revert\" href=\"http:\/\/www.molodist.com\/ \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Molodist International Film festival in Kyiv (October 25 \u2013 November 2, 2014)<\/a><span style=\"font-size: revert;color: initial\"> dedicates generous space to a special Focus on Slovak cinema, presenting films from the early silent beginnings to the contemporary reflection of Slovakia nowadays. From Kyiv, the collection of films travels to Lviv, as a special Slovak Molodist extension.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Focus section offers an interesting glimpse to the Slovak film archives, starting with <strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">J\u00e1no\u0161\u00edk<\/span><\/strong> by Jaroslav Siake\u013e, the very first full-length film made in 1921 by American Slovaks coming to their homeland to shoot the story of the Slovak national hero. Thanks to their enthusiasm and devotion, Slovakia ranks among the first countries with a silent full-length feature film.<\/p>\n<p>Three films from the period of 1960s present the creative spirit of the times: the lyrical story of <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/blu-ray\/blu-ray-slnko-v-sieti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Sun in a Net<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (1962) by \u0160tefan Uher, as the first film of the acclaimed Czecho-Slovak New Wave, being also the opening film of the Focus; wonderful masterpiece <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/dvd\/kym-sa-skonci-tato-noc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Before Tonight Is Over<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (1965) full of creative improvisation\u00a0 by Peter Solan and Juraj Jakubisko\u00b4s tale of love, death and insanity <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/dvd\/vtackovia-siroty-a-blazni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Birds,<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic\">Orphans and Fools<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (1969). The collection also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/blu-ray\/blu-ray-obrazy-stareho-sveta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Pictures of the Old World<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (1972) by Du\u0161an Han\u00e1k showing intimate portraits of old people living free even in a civilization of chaos and uncertainty, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/dvd\/neha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Tenderness<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (1991), debut feature by Martin \u0160ul\u00edk in which he sends twenty-year-old \u0160imon on a journey of self-discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Building on the tradition of the great works of Slovak cinema, some of which are part of the Focus, <strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Slovakia 2.0 <\/span><\/strong>(2014) unites 10 contemporary film directors across generations in an attempt to explain the notion of Slovakia of the past 20 years to an unknown stranger, a visitor from another planet.<\/p>\n<p>With a special programme for children, two Slovak unique fairy-tales by Juraj Jakubisko are presented in the Molodist for Kids: <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/dvd\/perinbaba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Fairy Lady<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (1985), featuring Giulietta Masina using her magic to send snow down on Earth and do some good in people6\u00b4s lives, and <strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Freckled Max and the Spooks<\/span><\/strong> (1987), a parody of frankensteinian stories about a little orphan landing in a castle full of scary creatures.<\/p>\n<p>Slovak contestant in the International Competition of Student Films, <strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">The Stop on the Main Street<\/span><\/strong> (2013) by Peter Zaku\u0165ansk\u00fd, also draws on strong filmmaking tradition, namely the Oscar-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/eshop\/blu-ray\/blu-ray-obchod-na-korze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>The Shop on Main Street<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (1965) by J\u00e1n Kad\u00e1r and Elmar Klos.<\/p>\n<p>In the Industry section of the festival, 6th Boat Meeting, Slovak producer Wanda Adamik Hrycova (Wandal Production) will present the upcoming film by Peter Bebjak, <strong><span style=\"font-style: italic\">Shengen Story<\/span><\/strong>, currently in development and in search of Central and Eastern European co-producers.<\/p>\n<p>After the presentation at Molodist in Kyiv, The Focus section moves to the city of Lviv as a special showcase in the cinema Sokil, co-organized by the local \u201cart formation\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/wiz-art.ua \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wiz-art<\/a>, organizer of various modern cultural events with the aim to develop, organize and provoke cultural sector in Ukraine through film and visual culture.
