The 31st festival edition will feature a major retrospective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmfestivalcottbus.de\/en\/festival-en\/program-en\/sections-en\/section\/35.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotlight: Slovensko<\/a>, which will present inspiring double bills of cult films from the 1960s and current productions. Three new Slovak films will be screened in two competition sections of the festival, and we will also have representatives in two festival juries.<\/p>\n<p>The Cottbus Film Festival is one of the most important events focusing on Eastern European cinema. In the Feature Film Competition, Peter Kerekes&#8217; film <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/107-mothers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">107 Mothers<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and V\u00e1clav Kadrnka&#8217;s drama <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/saving-one-who-was-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Saving One Who Was Dead<\/strong><\/a><\/em> will be presented, while Roman Pivovarn\u00edk&#8217;s student film <em><strong>Views<\/strong> <\/em>will compete for the prize in the Short Film Competition.<\/p>\n<p>Among contemporary films, the audience will also see Olmo Omerzu&#8217;s new film <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/bird-atlas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bird Atlas<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and Vera Lackova&#8217;s documentary debut<strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/how-i-became-a-partisan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How I Became a Partisan<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. Both films will be screened at the festival on the occasion of the directors&#8217; participation in the festival juries. The children&#8217;s festival programme will include the family film <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/martin-and-the-magical-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin and the Magical Forest<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by Petr Oukropec. Slovakia will also be represented in the Industry programme <a href=\"https:\/\/connecting-cottbus.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connecting cottbus<\/a>, with the projects <strong><em>The White Mare<\/em><\/strong> by Theodor Kuhn and<strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Word<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by Beata Parkanov\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion of the centenary of Slovak cinema, the festival will present\u00a0retrospective programme\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmfestivalcottbus.de\/en\/festival-en\/program-en\/sections-en\/section\/35.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotlight: Slovensko<\/a><\/strong>, curated by\u00a0Rastislav Steranka, Director of the National Cinematography Centre of the SFI and curator of the Filmoteka of Kino Lumi\u00e8re, and Bernd Buder, Programme Director of the Cottbus Film Festival. Together, they have put together seven double bills.<\/p>\n<p>The Cottbus Film Festival will screen five double programmes with ten films. The double bill entitled For a Better Future thematically links the journey to work with the belief in a better future and is represented by the films<strong> <em>Beware&#8230;!<\/em><\/strong> (1946) by Martin Fri\u010d and <strong><em>Made in Ash <\/em><\/strong>(2012) by Iveta Gr\u00f3fov\u00e1. The double programme Dare or Die \u2013 Surviving the Holocaust? consists of <strong><em>The Boxer and Death <\/em><\/strong>(1962) by Peter Solan and <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-auschwitz-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Auschwitz Report<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (2020) by Peter Bebjak, Night Bar Fatale \u2013 Urban Microcosm features short <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/fifi-fatale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Fifi Fatale<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2018) by M\u00e1ria Kralovi\u010d and <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/eshop\/uncategorized\/before-tonight-is-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Before Tonight is Over<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (1965) by Peter Solan, Life as an Existential Battle will present the titles <strong><em>The Bells Toll for the Barefooted<\/em><\/strong> (1965) by Stanislav Barab\u00e1\u0161 and <strong><em>My Dog Killer<\/em><\/strong> (2013) by Mira Fornay, the double bill Unfortunate Returns will show short <strong><em>Are You Feeling Good?<\/em><\/strong> (2011) by Mat\u00fa\u0161 Kraj\u0148\u00e1k and <strong><em>Dragon\u2018s Return<\/em><\/strong> (1967) by Eduard Gre\u010dner. In total, the curators have prepared seven pairs, two of which \u2013 composed of documentary titles \u2013 were already presented during the previous two months in Berlin, in the form of &#8220;warm up&#8221; screenings. In the Czech Centre in September, the audience saw the double bill Worlds Beyond Light with \u0160tefan Uher&#8217;s <strong><em>Marked by Darkness<\/em><\/strong> (1959) and Juraj Lehotsky&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/eshop\/uncategorized\/blind-loves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Blind Loves<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2008); in October, the Slovak Institute in Berlin screened a double bill Images of Stark Reality, which presented Marek Mou\u010dka&#8217;s <strong><em>In Shallow Water<\/em><\/strong> (2020) and Du\u0161an Han\u00e1k&#8217;s <strong><em>Pictures of the Old World<\/em><\/strong> (1972).<\/p>\n<p>More information at: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmfestivalcottbus.de\/en\/\">https:\/\/www.filmfestivalcottbus.de\/en\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the first week of November, audiences at the Cottbus Film Festival in Germany (2 \u2013 7 November 2021) will have the opportunity to discover Slovak cinema.
