Six Slovak films will compete for prizes, while the festival will commemorate the centenary of multiple Slovak filmmakers and will also host the launch of new book entitled <em>M\u00e1me svoj film! Slovensk\u00e1 filmov\u00e1 kult\u00fara a propaganda 1939 \u2013 1945<\/em> [<em>We have a film! Slovak film culture and propaganda 1939 \u2013 1945<\/em>] by film historian Petra Han\u00e1kov\u00e1. The 30th edition of Art Film will take place from June 21 to 28.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gy\u00f6rgy Krist\u00f3f\u2019s new film <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/zenith\/\">Zenith<\/a><\/strong>, produced by Dynamo Productions, will have its world premiere in Ko\u0161ice. A dystopian dance drama about power dynamics that have shaped the political landscape in recent decades not only in Central Europe was selected for the <em>International Competition of Feature Films<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three Slovak films are up for the awards in the new <em>International Competition of Central and Eastern European Films<\/em>. The documentary <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/aquabells-from-prandorf\/\">Aquabells from Prandorf<\/a><\/strong>, directed by Palo Korec and produced by FilmWorx, will celebrate its first public screening. The film follows five women from the village of Devi\u010dany near Bansk\u00e1 \u0160tiavnica, who began to harden themselves in the nearby tajch and rebel against gender stereotypes. After the successful premiere at the Berlinale, the film <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-editorial-office\/\">The Editorial Office<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Roman Bondarchuk, co-prod. Silverart) will celebrate its Slovak premiere \u2013 same as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/fakir\/\">Fakir<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Roman \u010euri\u0161, prod. Bright Sight Pictures), which was already screened at Dok.fest M\u00fcnchen and Docs Against Gravity in Warsaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>International Competition of Short Films<\/em> includes an internationally successful film <strong>Cold and Dark<\/strong> by Peter Ho\u0161t\u00e1k, a Slovak documentary filmmaker based in Canada, about a draft horse named Kubo and his logging community. The second piece in the competition is an experimental film about the boundaries between the analog and digital world <strong>Beyond Anachronism: Eons of the Binary (Film)<\/strong> by Claude Johann \u010cierny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven new Slovak films were selected for the non-competitive <em>Slovak Season<\/em> section. One of them is a feature-length documentary <strong>Returns to Pictures of the Old World<\/strong> about director Du\u0161an Han\u00e1k and his famous film from the early 1970s. The documentary was produced by the Slovak Film Institute and directed by R\u00f3bert \u0160ul\u00e1k. The section also includes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/kalmanov-den\/\">Kalman\u2019s Day<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Szabolcs Hajdu, co-prod. MPhilms), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/calm-in-the-canopy\/\">Calm in the Canopy<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Michal Hogenauer, co-prod. Silverart), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/olympic-halftime\/\">Olympic Halftime<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Haruna Honcoop, co-prod. VIRUSfilm), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/i-dont-love-you-anymore\/\">I Don&#8217;t Love You Anymore<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Zden\u011bk Jir\u00e1sk\u00fd, co-prod. ARINA), <strong>Via Slovakia<\/strong> (dir. V\u00ed\u0165azoslav Chrappa, prod. FilmWorx) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/villa-lucia\/\">Villa Lucia \u2013 Director\u2019s cut<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Michal Koll\u00e1r, prod. KFS Production). Young audience can look forward to the successful animated feature <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/tony-shelly-and-the-magic-light\/\">Tony, Shelly and the Magic Light<\/a><\/strong> (dir. Filip Po\u0161iva\u010d, prod. nutprodukcia), while the film <strong>Footprints: Fighting in Bansk\u00e1 \u0160tiavnica<\/strong> (dir. Peter Ga\u0161par\u00edk, prod. PEGART) will be presented in the Panorama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many as 14 Slovak classic films from the archives of the Slovak Film Institute find themselves in the Art Film programme. The festival will commemorate the centenary of five important personalities of Slovak cinema in the <em>Anniversaries with the SFI<\/em>. The audience can get to know one of the key auteurs of Slovak animation, Vlastimil Herold, through six of his short films: <strong>The Apple of Knowledge<\/strong> (1955), <strong>Saturday Is Here<\/strong> (1972), <strong>Little Mouse Cooked Some Grits<\/strong> (1974), <strong>Inventor<\/strong> (1983), <strong>The Magician and the Flower Girl<\/strong> (1986), and <strong>The Strange Bird<\/strong> (1987). The festival also selected five films from the rich oeuvre of documentary director Vlado Kubenko: <strong>[Switch Tower Hell]<\/strong>, <strong>Modern Indian Painters<\/strong> (both 1967), <strong>Kali\u0161te<\/strong> (1973), <strong>Whittle Again the Wooden Horse of Childhood<\/strong> (1973) and <strong>Jozef Kostka<\/strong> (1987).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Director Stanislav Barab\u00e1\u0161 was also born a hundred years ago and the festival will screen his feature-length debut <strong>The Song of the Grey Pigeon<\/strong> (1961). Actor Jozef Kroner will be commemorated by Art Film with the film <strong>The Devil Never Sleeps<\/strong> (1956) directed by Petr Solan and Franti\u0161ek \u017d\u00e1\u010dek, in which he played four different characters, while actor Ladislav Chud\u00edk will be celebrated with Pa\u013eo Bielik\u2019s <strong>Captain Daba\u010d <\/strong>(1959). Both actors also appeared in <strong>Midnight Mass<\/strong> (1962), directed by Ji\u0159\u00ed Krej\u010d\u00edk, which the festival screen on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Film historian Petra Han\u00e1kov\u00e1 will present her new book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/eshop\/knihy\/mame-svoj-film\/\">M\u00e1me svoj film! Slovensk\u00e1 filmov\u00e1 kult\u00fara a propaganda 1939 \u2013 1945<\/a><\/em> [<em>We have a film! Slovak film culture and propaganda 1939 \u2013 1945<\/em>], published by the Slovak Film Institute. On this occasion, three short films from this period will be screened: <strong>Permanent Lights<\/strong> (1940) by Ivan J. Kova\u010devi\u010d, <strong>In the White Paradise<\/strong> (1943) by Eugen Matei\u010dka and <strong>On the Island of Cormorants<\/strong> (1944\/1946) by Pa\u013eo Bielik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Suzanne<\/strong> (1996), directed by Du\u0161an Rapo\u0161, will be screened on the occasion of the awarding Maro\u0161 Kram\u00e1r with the Actor\u2019s Mission award.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Slovak cinema has once again strong presence at the Art Film International Film Festival in Ko\u0161ice.
