{"id":41817,"date":"2024-06-22T08:00:35","date_gmt":"2024-06-22T06:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/novinky\/karlovy-vary-2024\/"},"modified":"2024-07-31T11:37:51","modified_gmt":"2024-07-31T09:37:51","slug":"karlovy-vary-2024","status":"publish","type":"novinka","link":"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/karlovy-vary-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight Slovak films to premiere at the Karlovy Vary IFF 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>It is a strong year for the Slovak cinema at the 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which takes place from June 28 to July 6, 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three Slovak films will compete for prizes in the Crystal Globe Competition. The first of them is the historical drama <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-hungarian-dressmaker\/\">The Hungarian Dressmaker<\/a><\/em> directed by Iveta Gr\u00f3fov\u00e1, produced by PubRes and co-produced by RTVS, among others. An adaptation of Peter Kri\u0161t\u00fafek\u2019s novel of the same name, the film is set in the Slovak-Hungarian border region during World War 2 and follows the story of the Hungarian widow Marika and Jewish boy \u0160imon who is in hiding. You can learn more about the film in <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/interview-iveta-grofova-kviff-2024\/\">a short <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/interview-iveta-grofova-kviff-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview with Iveta Gr\u00f3fov\u00e1<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beata Parkanov\u00e1\u2019s follow-up to her 2022 directing award-winner, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Word<\/a><\/em>, is called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/tiny-lights\/\">Tiny Lights<\/a><\/em> (co-prod. AZYL Production, RTVS). This intimate family drama captures a day in the life of six-year-old Am\u00e1lka, whose parents are going through a marital crisis. Adam Martinec will present his feature debut <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/our-lovely-pig-slaugher\/\">Our Lovely Pig Slaugher<\/a><\/em> (co-prod. filmsomnia), a study of Czech nature that evokes the works of the Czech New Wave. The film takes placeduring what is known as &#8220;zab\u00edja\u010dka&#8221; in Slovakia\u2014a traditional event where the entire family gathers to slaughter a pig and process the meat\u2014which means that the drama does not take long to unfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Proxima Competition section dedicated to fresh and formally bolder works also gives space to the feature debut of Paula \u010eurinov\u00e1 titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/lapilli\/\">Lapilli<\/a> <\/em>(prod. gu\u010da films), a personal experimental documentary about coping with the loss of grandparents, rock formations, and sea currents. Paula \u010eurinov\u00e1 talks more about the film <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/interview-paula-durinova-kviff-2024\/\">in a short interview<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Future Frames: Generation NEXT of European Cinema section, co-organized by the European Film Promotion, of which the Slovak Film Institute is also a member, focuses on young filmmakers. This year&#8217;s Slovak representative is Katar\u00edna Gramatov\u00e1 with a short graduation documentary film <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/a-good-mind-grows-in-thorny-places\/\">A Good Mind Grows in Thorny Places<\/a><\/em> (prod. FTF V\u0160MU) about young people growing up in a small Slovak village. Katar\u00edna Gramatov\u00e1 told us more about the film <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/interview-katarina-gramatova-kviff-2024\/\">in a short interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/janzurka-2-1200x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41930\" style=\"width:350px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/janzurka-2-1200x675.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/janzurka-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/janzurka-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/janzurka-2-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/janzurka-2.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Out of the Past section is dedicated to the history of cinema. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/janzurka\/\">Actress<\/a><\/em> directed by Theodora Remundov\u00e1, co-produced by PubRes, Slovak Film Institute, and RTVS, is a feature documentary about the prominent Czechoslovak film and theater actress Iva Jan\u017eurov\u00e1, filmed through the eyes of her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After its success at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the Czech audience will have a chance to see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/living-large\/\">Living Large<\/a><\/em> directed by Kristina Dufkov\u00e1, produced on the Slovak side by NOVINSKI and co-produced by RTVS and Magiclab. Slovak producer Agata Novinski tells us more about the film telling the story of a 12-year-old boy who comes to terms with his weight <a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/interview-agata-novinski-kviff-2024\/\">in a short interview<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/interview-agata-novinski-kviff-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year\u2019s Venice Orizzonti winner <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/explanation-for-everything\/\">Explanation for Everything<\/a><\/em> (dir. G\u00e1bor Reisz, co-prod. MPhilms) about graduation turned into a national scandal was also selected for the Horizons<em> <\/em>section.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/architektura-cssr-58-89.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41826\" style=\"width:467px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/architektura-cssr-58-89.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/architektura-cssr-58-89-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/architektura-cssr-58-89-768x288.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sfu.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/architektura-cssr-58-89-600x225.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As part of the Special Screenings section, the audience in Karlovy Vary can look forward to four Slovak films. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/czechoslovak-architecture-58-89\/\">Czechoslovak Architecture 58\u201389<\/a><\/em> (dir. Jan Zaj\u00ed\u010dek, co-prod. AZYL Production, RTVS), as the name suggests, takes a closer look at Czechoslovak post-war architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marie-Magdalena Kochov\u00e1\u2019s feature debut <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-other-one\/\">The Other One<\/a><\/em> (co-prod. gu\u010da films) is an intimate portrait of a family in which one child has special needs, while their sister always remains \u201cthe other one\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ji\u0159\u00ed M\u00e1dl\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/waves\/\">Waves<\/a><\/em> (co-prod. Wandal Production) takes us back to the end of the 1960s 1960s, portraying the dramatic struggles of personalities at the Czechoslovak Radio&#8217;s international news office for freedom during challenging times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a successful premiere at the Berlinale, a documentary portrait of the prominent Czech photographer Libu\u0161a Jarcovj\u00e1kov\u00e1 entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/im-not-everything-i-want-to-be\/\">I\u2019m Not Everything I Want to Be<\/a><\/em> (dir. Kl\u00e1ra Tasovsk\u00e1, co-prod. nutprodukcia) will have its Czech premiere in Karlovy Vary.
