{"id":43850,"date":"2024-09-09T12:28:11","date_gmt":"2024-09-09T10:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/novinky\/cinematik-2024\/"},"modified":"2024-09-09T13:03:44","modified_gmt":"2024-09-09T11:03:44","slug":"cinematik-2024","status":"publish","type":"novinka","link":"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/news\/cinematik-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"IFF Cinematik once again with significant Slovak representation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Slovak cinema gets significant visibility at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinematik.sk\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Film Festival Cinematik Pie\u0161\u0165any<\/a> (September 10 \u2013 15, 2024) every year, whether it is thanks to the Cinematik.doc competition, non-competitive sections, or section for classic films.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cinematik.doc, one of the two competition sections of the festival, is dedicated to Slovak feature-length documentaries. This year, seven films are vying for the awards, two of which will be presented in a world premiere. The first is Daniela Meressa Rusnokov\u00e1\u2019s debut feature <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/grey-zone\/\">Grey Zone<\/a><\/em>, \u201ca cinematic essay, a personal story, a tribute to mothers and families of premature babies, at-risk newborns, and the vulnerable disadvantaged.\u201d In his documentary <em>Question of the Future<\/em>, Maro\u0161 Br\u00e1zda follows five high-school graduates in search of an answer to the question: what does the future hold for the younger generation, as well as for our country as a whole?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition selection also includes <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/emilia\/\">Em\u00edlia<\/a><\/em>, a portrait of actress Em\u00edlia V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1, directed by Martin \u0160ul\u00edk; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/lapilli\/\">Lapilli<\/a><\/em>, an essay about minerals and coping with the loss of loved ones, by Paula \u010eurinov\u00e1; Roman \u010euri\u0161\u2019s debut feature <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/fakir\/\">Fakir<\/a><\/em> about finding a way out of generational poverty; Jaro Vojtek\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-third-end-of-the-stick\/\">The Third End of the Stick<\/a><\/em>, a view of otherness within otherness; and an essay <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-birdhill\/\">The Birdhill<\/a><\/em> on the unregulated transformation of Bratislava\u2019s Vt\u00e1\u010dnik district by the debuting director Eva Kri\u017ekov\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival program also includes classic film. The audience can thus look forward to the 1965 existential drama set in the last stages of the Second World War, <em>The Bells Toll for the Barefooted<\/em> by Stanislav Barab\u00e1\u0161. Year 2024 is the centenary of this renowned Slovak director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the House section offers an overview of contemporary Slovak cinema with selected films presented to the Slovak audience for the first time. One of them is Peter Kerekes\u2019 documentary about finding happiness with the help of astrology, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/wishing-on-a-star\/\">Wishing on a Star<\/a><\/em>, which premiered less than two weeks ago in Venice. Three other films had a successful premiere at the Karlovy Vary IFF at the beginning of the summer: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-hungarian-dressmaker\/\">The Hungarian Dressmaker<\/a><\/em> by director Iveta Gr\u00f3fov\u00e1 is a drama set on the Slovakian-Hungarian border during the Second World War; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/czechoslovak-architecture-58-89\/\">Czechoslovak Architecture 58\u201389<\/a><\/em> by Jan Zaj\u00ed\u010dek takes a look at the post-war Czechoslovak architecture; while <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/tiny-lights\/\">Tiny Lights<\/a><\/em> by Beata Parkanov\u00e1 is an intimate family drama about a marital crisis from the point of view of a six-year-old girl. After the premiere in Annecy, a short animated film about clumsy activists trying to help some poor animals, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/free-the-chickens\/\">Free the Chickens<\/a><\/em> by Mat\u00fa\u0161 Viz\u00e1r, will be shown to the audiences in Pie\u0161\u0165any, as well as the documentary about photographer Libu\u0161e Jardovj\u00e1kov\u00e1 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/im-not-everything-i-want-to-be\/\">I\u2019m Not Everything I Want to Be<\/a><\/em> by Kl\u00e1ra Tasovsk\u00e1, which started its festival life at the beginning of the year at the Berlinale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The section also includes a film by Palo Korec <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/aquabells-from-prandorf\/\">Aquabelles from Prandorf<\/a><\/em> about five women from a small village who began to toughen up and rebel against gender stereotypes, and two short student films programmes from the Academy of Arts in Bansk\u00e1 Bystrica and the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. The first selection consists of the films <em>Crossroads of Jozef Cabelka<\/em> (dir. Martin Polereck\u00fd), <em>Between Two Worlds<\/em> (dir. Daniela Anna Korimov\u00e1), and <em>What More Said<\/em> (dir. Martin Da\u0161ko); the second selection consists of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/the-most-beautiful-corner-in-the-world\/\">The Most Beautiful Corner in the World<\/a><\/em> (dir. Robert Mih\u00e1ly), <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/a-good-mind-grows-in-thorny-places\/\">A Good Mind Grows in Thorny Places<\/a><\/em> (Katar\u00edna Gramatov\u00e1), <em>Silo<\/em> (dir. Imrich K\u00fatik), <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/this-peculiar-day\/\">This Peculiar Day<\/a><\/em> (dir. Em\u00edlia Ondria\u0161ov\u00e1), and <em>The Whisper of Freedom<\/em> (dir. Anna Ahaliieva)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cinematik Jr., a section designed for the young audience, will welcome the Annecy award-winning animated feature <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/living-large\/\">Living Large<\/a><\/em> by Kristina Dufkov\u00e1. The film tells the story of a young boy struggling with his weight, who ultimately learns that it\u2019s not a person\u2019s appearance that truly matters, but how they feel about themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Other Spaces section, four more feature-length Slovak films that have already been or currently are in cinema distribution will be presented. Among them are the dystopian dance film <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/zenith\/\">Zenith<\/a><\/em> directed by Gy\u00f6rgy Krist\u00f3f; the latest film by Ji\u0159\u00ed M\u00e1dl, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/waves\/\">Waves<\/a><\/em>, set against the backdrop of the August 1968 events; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/our-lovely-pig-slaughter\/\">Our Lovely Pig Slaughter<\/a><\/em> by Adam Martinec capturing the typical Czech celebration; and the drama about nationalism and a failed high school graduation, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sfu.sk\/en\/films\/explanation-for-everything\/\">Explanation for Everything<\/a><\/em> by G\u00e1bor Reisz, which was awarded in last year\u2019s Venice. Also included in the selection is Erika Jasa\u0148\u2019s short film <em>The Professional Parent<\/em>, which takes a look at the foster care system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slovak cinema will also be an important part of accompanying program. The festival will hold panel discussions about the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, film education, the current state of the culture sector, and Slovak films reflecting the problem with the mafia.
