The 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival<\/a> kicks off this Friday (July 4 \u2013 12, 2025)!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s Crystal Globe Competition includes two Slovak minority co-productions. Established Slovak director Miro Remo will world premiere his new documentary Better Go Mad in the Wild<\/em> <\/a>(Rad\u011bji ze\u0161\u00edlet v divo\u010din\u011b<\/em>, prod. Arsy-Versy). Competing will be also the feature film Broken Voices<\/a><\/em> (Zbormajster<\/em>), co-produced by Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd (Punkchart Films).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The director Paula \u010eurinov\u00e1 has made it again to the Proxima Competition section, this time with her new documentary Action Item<\/a><\/em> (Neplaten\u00e9 vo\u013eno<\/em>, prod. gu\u010da films, cover photo). The Special Screenings section will bring many Slovak titles this year. Among them is the highly anticipated premiere of the biopic Ducho\u0148<\/a><\/em> (prod. D.N.A. Production, left photo), about Slovak music icon Karol Ducho\u0148. A behind-the-scenes interview with its producer Ras\u0165o \u0160est\u00e1k is available here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

A successful directorial feature debut comes from Katar\u00edna Gramatov\u00e1\u2019s film Promise I\u00b4ll be Fine<\/a><\/em> (Hore je nebo, v doline som ja<\/em>, prod. DRYEYE Film, right photo), which premiered last fall at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Learn more in the <\/a>interview with the director<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another eagerly awaited title is Caravan<\/a><\/em> (Karavan<\/em>, prod. nutprodukcia), which recently premiered at the Festival de Cannes. More information is available in the <\/a>interview with the film\u2019s Slovak DoPs<\/a><\/strong>.
Also co-produced by Jakub Viktor\u00edn (nutprodukcia) is the minority Summer School 2001<\/a><\/em> (Letn\u00e1 \u0161kola, 2001<\/em>), which closes this section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Horizons section presents the drama Perla<\/a><\/em> (co-prod. HAILSTONE), which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, and the animated feature film for children Tales from<\/a> <\/a>the Magic Garden<\/a><\/em> (Pr\u00edbehy z \u010darovenej z\u00e1hrady<\/em>, prod. Artichoke), which premiered this year at the Berlinale. An interview with the filmmakers is available here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Imagina section will world-premiere the Slovak minority 1+1+1<\/em> <\/a>(dir. Ond\u0159ej Vavre\u010dka, co-prod. Virus film).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Pragueshorts at KVIFF selection, we can find the audience-favorite animated short Hurik\u00e1n<\/a><\/em> (dir. Jan Saska, co-prod. Artichoke) and I Died in Irpin<\/a><\/em> (Zomrela som v Irpini<\/em>, dir. Anastasiia Falileieva, co-prod. Artichoke), which won the Award for Best International Animation at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Out of the Past, section dedicated to the history of cinema, will screen the 1997 film Time Is Running Out and the Wat<\/em>er Is Rising<\/em><\/a> (\u010casu je m\u00e1lo a voda st\u00fapa<\/em>), directed by Ivo Brachtl and De\u017eo Ursiny.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Film Industry at KVIFF will present a new program initiative created in collaboration with film institutes from Central European countries – the KVIFF Central Stage<\/a><\/strong>. Among Slovak majority productions a project L\u00e1ska<\/em><\/a> by Marko \u0160kop (prod. ARTILERIA, left image), currently in production phase, has been chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
