The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival<\/a> celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Taking place from 3\u201311 July 2026, the festival will once again showcase a strong Slovak presence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main Crystal Globe Competition will bring the long-awaited new feature by Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd \u2013 Only Beautiful Things to Look At<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (prod. Punkchart Films). Set within the Czechoslovak healthcare system of the 1980s, the drama stars A\u0148a Geislerov\u00e1 in the leading role of a doctor. A Slovak co-production Chica Checa<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (dir. \u0160imon Hol\u00fd, SK co-prod. ARINAFILM) will also compete for the Crystal Globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martina Buchelov\u00e1\u2019s feature debut Lover, Not a Fighter<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (prod. NINJA FILM) has been selected for the Proxima Competition. Joining the Proxima line-up is 33 Steps<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, a thriller from directing duo Anna & \u0160imon Dom\u010dek, produced by Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd (prod. escadra). Karlovy Vary will also host the second premiere of an authorial work by Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd \u2013 Igor and After<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (prod. Punkchart Films). The film, dedicated to the exceptional Slovak cinematographer Igor Luther, will premiere in the Special Screenings \u2013 Classics section. In the Out of the Past \u2013 KVIFF 60\/80 section, the festival will screen Birds, Orphans and Fools<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (dir. Juraj Jakubisko, 1969), on which Luther worked as DoP and which received the FIPRESCI Prize in Karlovy Vary in 1990. Magda V\u00e1\u0161\u00e1ryov\u00e1, the protagonist of one of the main characters of this f\u00e9erie, will receive the President\u2019s Award at the festival <\/p>\n\n\n

Five Slovak co-productions will receive Special Screenings at this year\u2019s festival: the documentary To Die to Li<\/em>ve<\/strong><\/a> (dir. Yuliia Hontaruk, SK co-prod. Silverart), exploring the lives of Ukrainian war veterans; the biographical portrait The Pint of Ink<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, in which director Ester Geislerov\u00e1 traces the life and legacy of her father (SK co-prod. PubRes); drama The Cursed Warrior<\/strong><\/em> (dir. Vojt\u011bch Fri\u010d, Tom\u00e1\u0161 Diani\u0161ka, SK co-prod. B Production) starring Milan Ondr\u00edk in the lead role; the fiction film City of Fathers<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (dir. Zden\u011bk Tyc, SK co-prod. ARTILERIA); and the acclaimed documentary If Pigeons Turned to Gold<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (dir. Pepa Lubojacki, SK co-prod. gu\u010da films), which won the Best Documentary Award at this year\u2019s Berlinale. Gu\u010da films is also the co-producer behind Orla<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, a short rap eco-feminist fairytale that premiered earlier this year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Its director, Marie Luk\u00e1\u010dov\u00e1, has been selected among this year\u2019s ten Future Frames participants, a programme organised by European Film Promotion for emerging filmmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n

Last year, the KVIFF Industry Days platform introduced a new format \u2013 KVIFF Central Stage<\/a><\/strong>, which aimes to connect established filmmakers from Central Europe. The initiative was created in cooperation with the national film institutes of the region, including the Slovak Film Institute. Slovakia will be represented by Michal Bla\u0161ko\u2019s project Cowgirl<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (prod. nutprodukcia), which is currently in post-production, and a minority The Stones Are Rolling to Prague<\/strong><\/em> (dir. Tom\u00e1\u0161 Hodan, SK co-prod. B Production), which is in development. This year, we can also look forward to the new Book-to-Screen at KVIFF<\/a><\/strong> platform, where Daniel Majling will present his novel The Zone<\/em> (published by BRaK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
