The 39th edition of the Fin\u00e1le Plze\u0148<\/a> festival, taking place from September 25 to 30, 2026, will showcase contemporary Czech film and television production. Slovakia once again enjoys strong representation at the festival.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nine works are competing for awards in the Feature Live Action or Animated Films Competition, with seven of them co-productions involving Slovakia. Two are majority Slovak productions: Lover, Not a Fighter<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a playful debut by Martina Buchelov\u00e1 about the lives of contemporary twenty-somethings; and Only Beautiful Things to Look At<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the latest film by Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd, which addresses the issue of the involuntary sterilization of Romani women. Both films premiered successfully at the Karlovy Vary IFF \u2013 as did \u0160imon Hol\u00fd\u2019s Chica Checa<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a film exploring queer identity and the complex relationship between a son and his mother. Olmo Omerzu\u2019s family drama Ungrateful Beings<\/a><\/em><\/strong> premiered at the San Sebasti\u00e1n Film Festival. Plze\u0148 will host the world premiere of Backwoods<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, the directorial debut by accomplished editor Ev\u017eenie Brabcov\u00e1; it tells the story of a father preparing for the end of the world and his daughter, who is fleeing an abusive husband. Rounding out the Slovak entries in the competition are the crime drama Little Thief<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by director Ond\u0159ej Hude\u010dek and the family drama Dancing with the Bear<\/em><\/strong> by Jitka Rudolfov\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four Slovak films will compete for the Golden Kingfisher award in the documentary category. Among them is the majority Slovak production Chronicle<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by Martin Kollar, which captures fleeting moments of life in contemporary Slovakia. The selection also includes the Berlinale-awarded film about addiction and homelessness If Pigeons Turned to Gold<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (dir. Pepa Lubojacki), the documentary on intimacy and the OnlyFans platform Virtual Girlfriends<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (dir. Barbora Chalupov\u00e1), and a personal journey tracing footsteps of the director\u2019s father, The Pint of Ink<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (dir. Ester Geislerov\u00e1). A film with Slovak minority co-production status is also competing in the short film category: the rap fairy tale Orla<\/a><\/em><\/strong> by director Maria Luk\u00e1\u010dov\u00e1, which premiered earlier this year at the IFF Rotterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the First Catch section \u2013 dedicated to premieres and pre-premieres of new films \u2013 audiences can look forward to the identity-seeking drama City of Fathers<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (dir. Zden\u011bk Tyc) and Tom\u00e1\u0161 Hub\u00e1\u010dek\u2019s debut Wirbel<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, which explores one\u2019s relationship to the landscape and collective memory. The In the Nets of 2025-26 section will present the MMA-themed film The Fighter<\/em><\/strong> (dir. Vojt\u011bch Fri\u010d, Tom\u00e1\u0161 Diani\u0161ka) and the animated adventure film for young audiences The Crystal Planet<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (dir. Arsen Anton Ostoji\u0107). Czech minority co-productions are featured in the Czech Traces section, including the period drama about the construction of the Starina reservoir, The Flood<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (dir. Martin Gonda) \u2013 Slovakia\u2019s Oscar entry, and winner of six Sun in a Net awards \u2013 as well as the biopic Nepela<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (dir. Gregor Valentovi\u010d), about one of the most famous Slovak athletes of the last century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
