This year, Slovak cinema has a particularly notable presence in the programme. Recently digitally restored, Birds, Orphans and Fools (1969), directed by Juraj Jakubisko, has been selected not only for the Treasures and Curiosities section but also as one of five films chosen by the organisers for the International Classic Film Market (MIFC). The festival’s 18th edition takes place from 10 to 18 October.

The Lumière Festival presents significant works from the history of cinema, highlighting the importance of preserving them for future generations. Under the Lumière Classics label, it draws attention to the dedicated and ongoing work of film archives around the world to restore, preserve and bring classic films back to “life”. The Treasures and Curiosities section presents some of the finest restorations of 20th-century cinema, including lesser-known works and films that have been forgotten in the archives. This year, among nearly forty films in the section, Slovakia will be represented by Juraj Jakubisko’s Birds, Orphans and Fools (1969), which has also been selected for the Re>Birth Programme of the International Classic Film Market (MIFC). The market takes place during the festival from 13 to 16 October.

The International Classic Film Market (MIFC) is aimed at professionals working in the field of film heritage and has been held at the Lumière Festival since 2013. The Re>Birth programme, which is being held for the fourth time as part of the market, connects rights holders of classic films seeking new commercial opportunities with potential buyers, distributors, festival programmers, sales agents, film laboratories, publishers and financial partners who could help support restoration and the re-release of films. Birds, Orphans and Fools has been selected for the Re>Birth “New” programme alongside four other recently restored films. This marks the first time a Slovak classic film will be presented at this prestigious classic film market.

“Having a digitally restored classic film screened at the Lumière Festival in Lyon is one thing; presenting it to potential buyers at the MIFC market is another. Festival screenings are intended for general audiences, while the market presentation is aimed at distributors. A film must first be selected for the festival programme before it can be submitted to the Re>Birth ‘New’ programme at the MIFC classic film market. It is essentially a pitching forum where digitally restored classic films are presented to distributors from around the world,” explains Rastislav Steranka, Director of the National Cinematographic Centre at the Slovak Film Institute (SFÚ), who will personally introduce Jakubisko’s film under the Lumière Classics label, both in the Treasures and Curiosities section and at the International Classic Film Market.

“Having a film selected among five titles in a worldwide competition is an achievement, but ideally, it is only the beginning. The presentation to distributors from around the world, followed by individual meetings, is crucial in this case. The aim of the Re>Birth ‘New’ programme is to help sell newly digitally restored classic films. If we succeed, that will be a real achievement,” he adds.

Birds, Orphans and Fools tells the story of three friends – Yorick, Andrej and Marta – for whom madness is the only means of escape in a violent era. The film is filled with imagination, poetry and tenderness, but also pain, cruelty, cynicism and unfulfilled dreams. Jakubisko conceived the idea of making a film about the absurdity of the world and the hopelessness of life in the aftermath of August 1968. The screenplay was written in just two weeks, and production began in October 1968, amid the oppressive atmosphere following the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet troops. The film never reached theatrical distribution and was banned for twenty years. In 1990, it was screened in the main competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it received the FIPRESCI Prize.

The screening of the digitally restored film at the Lumière Festival in Lyon will mark its world premiere. Following this prestigious screening, Jakubisko’s digitally restored film will be presented at Kino Lumière in Bratislava on 27 October at 6 p.m., in celebration of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. The restoration was carried out at the Slovak Film Institute’s digitisation facility.

Several other digitally restored Slovak films have previously been screened at the Lumière Festival in Lyon. Festival audiences have had the opportunity to see Viktor Kubal’s The Bloody Lady (1980), Elo Havetta’s Wild Lilies (1972), Peter Solan’s The Barnabáš Kos Case (1964), two films by Martin Hollý — Night Riders (1981) and A Case for the Defence Attorney (1964) — and Eduard Grečner’s drama Dragon’s Return (1967).

More information available at the Lumière Festival website

The Lumière Festival in Lyon is one of the most important events dedicated to showcasing the treasures of world cinema.
