During the first week of November, audiences at the Cottbus Film Festival in Germany (2 – 7 November 2021) will have the opportunity to discover Slovak cinema. The 31st festival edition will feature a major retrospective Spotlight: Slovensko, which will present inspiring double bills of cult films from the 1960s and current productions. Three new Slovak films will be screened in two competition sections of the festival, and we will also have representatives in two festival juries.

Two Slovak films, Lines (d. Barbora Sliepková) and Ordeal (d. Zuzana Piussi), will have their world premiere at 25th edition of Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival (October 26 – 31, 2021) which will also showcase work of Karol Plica, a pioneer of Czech-Slovak documentary cinema.

More than 20 Slovak animated films are heading to the Romanian capital. The 16th edition of the Animest International Animation Festival (8 – 17 October 2021) will focuse on Slovak cinema and present contemporary animation as well as feature-length classic film Brigand Jurko (1976) by Viktor Kubal from the collections of the National Film Archive of the Slovak Film Institute (SFI).

The 16th edition of the Cinematik International Film Festival (14-19 September 2021) will focus on Hungarian cinematography, with a rich representation of domestic productions in the programme. The Cinematik.doc competition section will feature the latest Slovak documentaries, the In the House section will present a selection of features and shorts, and classic films will commemorate an important anniversary of Slovak cinema.

The 28th Art Film Fest Košice International Film Festival (June 23 – 27, 2021) will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Slovak feature film, Jánošík (1921), with a special screening. Moreover, the new Slovak films will not be left out either, several of the films will have their premiere.

UK-based company Second Run has published so far six Slovak films licensed by the Slovak Film Institute (SFI). The latest entry, Peter Solan’s Before Tonight is Over (1965), will world premiere on Blu-ray on 14 June 2021.

Austrian Film Museum in Vienna presents Animace/Animácia – 100 Years of Czechoslovak, Czech and Slovak Film Animation organized in cooperation with the National Film Archive of the Slovak Film Institute (NFA SFI) and the Czech National Film Archive (NFA). The restrospective takes place from 3 September until 19 October 2020.

UK-based company Second Run has published so far five Slovak films licensed by the Slovak Film Institute (SFI). The latest entry, feature debut of Martin Šulík Tenderness (1991), will world premiere on Blu-ray on August 10, 2020.

The film festival in Sodankylä will be the first Finnish festival to move its edition online due to the pandemic. The online edition of the event, dubbed Midnight Sun Forever (June 10 – 14, 2020) will present more than 50 films including four Slovak gems from the 1960s. This will be the very first screening of Slovak classic films at an international online film event.
