The Slovak Film and Television Academy (SFTA) has selected Flood by Martin Gonda as Slovakia’s national candidate for the 99th Academy Awards (AMPAS) in the Best International Feature Film category.

On Thursday, April 9, the ceremonial presentation of the 2025 Sun in a Net Awards took place at the Old Market Hall in Bratislava. The national film and television awards are presented by the Slovak Film and Television Academy (SFTA), while the Slovak Film Institute (SFI) serves as a co-organizer and partner of the event.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Taking place from 3–11 July 2026, the festival will once again showcase a strong Slovak presence.

This year again, the programme of the 66th edition of the International Film Festival for Children and Youth Zlín Film Festival (28 May – 3 June 2026) will include several Slovak co-produced films for children and young audiences.

The 21st edition of Cinematik International Film Festival will take place in Piešťany from September 8 to 13, 2026. Its programme will feature two Slovak classics – Juraj Jakubisko’s feature-length debut The Prime of Life and the short animated film Penguin by Vladimír Popovič and Veronika Margótsyová – as well as over 20 contemporary Slovak films, including two co-produced by the Slovak Film Institute: Life or Film by Marek Šulík and Juraj Johanides, and Igor and After by Ivan Ostrochovský.

The 4 živly Summer Film Festival will be held in Banská Štiavnica for the 28th time on August 6-9, 2026 with the main theme being Generations. Despite the shortened programme, the audience can look forward to many Slovak films.

The programme of the 19th International Animation Festival Fest Anča, taking place from 30 June to 5 July 2026, includes nearly thirty contemporary Slovak animated films. The Slovak Film Institute (SFÚ) will also present eight classic animated films from its collections at Fest Anča.

In the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, from October 17 to November 2, the Filmoteca Capitólio will host a showcase titled Heroines of Czechoslovak Film. The event will feature more than forty classic feature and short films that highlight the presence of women in Czech and Slovak cinema. Representing Slovak cinematography at the showcase will be the first lady of animated filmmaking, Jaroslava Havettová.

The prestigious Lumière Festival in Lyon is one of the most important events dedicated to presenting films from the golden treasury of world cinema.
