4th BEAST International Film Festival with a rich Slovak participation
24. March 2021

BEAST International Film Festival is back and offers a rich Slovak participation. The 4th edition of BEAST IFF will first kick off from the 24th to the 28th of March in partnership with the Portuguese streaming platform Filmin.

The festival establishes itself as a complex channel of contemporary culture from Central and Eastern Europe to Portugal, putting the spotlight on novel cinematographic trends of countries such as Slovakia, which is represented by different sections of BEAST IFF.

The Official Competition, which has been the core of BEAST IFF since its first edition, will give a platform to one short-length film from Slovakia, In the EastWave program, aimed to supporting short and medium-length fiction films by promising young talents, Slovakian director Štefánia Lovasová will present To the Stars, in which an Instagram star has her world of colorful hairstyles and milkshakes invaded by a secret fan.

The V4 Screen program will call attention to two feature-length films from Slovakia. Servants by Ivan Ostrochovský about two students at a theological seminary in totalitarian Czechoslovakia. Fearing the dissolution of their school, the tutors are molding the seminarians into a shape satisfactory to the ruling Communist Party. Furthermore, Let There Be Light by Marko Škop, tells the story of Milan, a posted worker in Germany that returns to his hometown to spend Christmas with his wife and three kids. After discovering that his eldest son has become involved with a paramilitary youth group, Milan must call into question the deep-rooted traditions of his faith and village.

The Video Mapping workshop, in collaboration with the TRAKT platform, returns for its second edition. The project is inserted in the context of the V4 Academy section, a series of educational events organized in partnership with the Visegrad Film Hub partners, presenting masterclasses and workshops dedicated to the intersection between cinema and technology. The participants will have an overview of the different possibilities of creating a 3D live installation through projection mapping, which is a technical process that wraps projected virtual content around a real-world object.

After the end of the edition in March, BEAST IFF will continue until June 1st, through special monthly screenings, events, and the Visegrad Film Hub – an industry event dedicated to the Visegrad countries –, including even more screenings, masterclasses, and workshops, with an online and possibly on-site offer. In case it’s safe for festival spectators in the nearby future, limited screenings and activities will be held at traditional venues in the city of Porto.
