Slovakia is one of the countries in spotlight of industry platform When East Meets West (January, 20 – 22, 2019). A numerous delegation of Slovak film professionals will be representing the country at the event that is running paralely to 30th Trieste Film Festival (January 18 – 25, 2019). At the same time, the festival will introduce five Slovak films in various sections.
The Interpreter by Martin Šulík will vie in the feature film competition, Occupation 1968 (d. Evdokina Moskovina, Linda Dombrovszky, Magda Szymków, Maria Elisa Scheidt, Stephan Komandarev) will compete in the documentary film competition, and animation title Untravel (d. Ana Nedeljković, Nikola Majdak jr.) will be introduced in the short film competition. Furthermore, non-competition section Born in Trieste will screen documentary My Unknown Soldier by Anna Kryvenko, and retrospective section 1989 – 2019 Wind of Change will offer to Italian audiences Slovak classic Sitting on a Branch, I am Fine by Juraj Jakubisko, at the presence of the director.
Slovakia will also have a strong presence at the well established industry platform When East Meets West (WEMW). Each year, WEMW dedicates a special focus to two selected regions. This year´s edition will draw attention to the region of Central Eastern Europe, notably Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine, as well as Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands for the Benelux region. The aim of this regional East&West double focus is to offer the countries in spotlight a special room for the presentation of their audiovisual landscape, with the aim to strengthen collaboration between them. One of the case studies for an already existing and successful collaboration between the countries in focus will be Slovak-Ukrainian film The Line by director Peter Bebjak.
Furthermore, Slovak producer and director Peter Kerekes will be jury member of the co-production forum. It was his project Wishing on a Star that won the main award – CNC Development Award – at last year´s edition. Among the 22 selected projects of this year´s edition is also feature debut by Michal Blaško Victim. Last Stop Trieste, a work in progress section for projects in a stage of a fine cut, will screen Polish-Slovak documentary Wind (d. Michał Bielawski) to anexclusive panel of approximately 40 international sales agents, festival programmers and TV commissioning editors.
Slovak participation at WEMW 2019 is co-organized by Slovak Film Institute (SFI) and Slovak Film Commission (SFC).
