Slovak traces of experiment to be presented in Zagreb
26. April 2019

On April 30, 2019 the internationally renowned Kino Tuškanac in Zagreb will screen Pictures of the Old World by Dušan Hanák and a program of Slovak experimental documentary shorts made in 1960s and 1970s.

Seven short films will be presented in the program titled Traces of Experiment in Slovak Short Films. “The selection of films traces the most significant short films made mostly during the ‘Golden Era’ of 1960s, when political interference and bureaucratic control of filmmaking in nationalized Czechoslovak film industry was weakened. For the first time since the post-war restart of Slovak cinema in 1945, it was mostly a young generation of filmmakers who began to exhibit certain experimental tendencies which can be traced mostly in the works by Dušan Hanák, Juraj Jakubisko and Dušan Trančík. However, also filmmakers of older generation (documentary filmmakers such as Vlado Kubenko and Martin Slivka) began seeking different ways of working with cinematic images, music or sound discovering new ways how not to represent, not to narrate (refusing the use of voiceover) and not to illustrate,” says Marián Hausner and Martin Kaňuch from Slovak Film Institute who curated the program.

Water and Work (1963) by Martin Slivka, Old Shatterhand Came to See Us by Dušan Hanák, Switch Tower Hell by Vlado Kubenko, Blazing Rivers by Ctibor Kováč, Photographing the House Dwellers by Dušan Trančík, Eye by Juraj Bindzár, and The Red Cross Drummer by Juraj Jakubisko will be screened. The selection is based on program presented at last years’ International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. All films will be screened from 35 mm prints.
Program Traces of Experiment in Slovak Short Films is organized by Kino Tuškanac in cooperation with Slovak Film Institute (SFI) and will be presented by Rastislav Steranka, director of National Cinematographic Centre of SFI, and Tomáš Hudák from Foreign Department of the SFI.
