4. March 2019

Young Slovak director Michal Blaško will return to Cannes with his upcoming feature-length debut Victim. The project was selected for the 15th edition of LAtelier, Cinéfondation’s programme which helps emerging filmmakers realize their first feature films.

Upcoming drama tells a story of single mother Irina, a Ukrainian living in a small Czech town. One night, her teenage son Igor claims that he was assaulted by three young Roma. Irina demands justice, and is met with great solidarity. Until she spots inconsistencies in her son’s account. Victim brings the anatomy of the innocent lie, which reflects the atmosphere of our society and the power of prejudice.

The project previously received international recognition at the When East Meets West co-production market in Trieste and took home the FLOW Postproduction Award. The shooting will start in autumn 2019.

Victim is produced by Slovak company nutprodukcia (Jakub Viktorín) and co-produced by nutprodukce (CZ) and ESSE Production House (UA). The project was supported by Creative Europe MEDIA, Slovak Audiovisual Fund and Czech Film Fund.
