This year the 7th edition of the Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia embraces the theme of “keys to the city” that represents the people unlocking the doors of power and taking back control of their heartland. The festival will celebrate the 30th anniversary of 1989’s famously peaceful Velvet Revolution, the beginning of a new era of democracy in Czechoslovakia. On this special occasion, festival will bring a program that reflects the topic and successful contemporary cinema to the audience of Melbourne (September 19 – 22, 2019) and Canberra (October 4 – 6, 2019).
Opening Night‘s Czech-Slovak co-production On the Roof (d. Jiří Mádl) will tell a story about meeting someone we consider to be a stranger, but it may be part that we miss. The program also includes the feature films Jan Palach (d. Robert Sedláček), Intimate Enemy (d. Karel Janák), Shotgun Justice (d. Radek Bajgar) and documentary BATAstories (d. Peter Kerekes). The youngest audience will enjoy the fairy tale Christmas Wish (d. Peter Bebjak) and TV special Mimi & Lisa: Christmas Lights Mystery (d. Ivana Šebestová, Katarína Kerekesová). Slovak short will be represented by Journey (d. Marek Jasaň) that combines several animation techniques and Off Season (d. Andrea Kalinová) about abandoned Machnáč Sanatorium, one of the most remarkable buildings of the 20th century.
Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia is organized by Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia (CaSFFA) and IKSIMA Films.
