Slovak films started off the New Year very successfully. The 42nd Rotterdam IFF (January 23 – February 3, 2013) included in its programme two world premieres of films directed by upcoming Slovak directors.
In the Hivos Tiger Awards Competition section, the second feature by Mira Fornay My Dog Killer (2013) will compete for the Hivos Tiger Award. The film is a one-day story of eighteen-year-old Marek living near Slovak-Moravian border with his dad and with his racist friends – hooligans, however, Marek’s best friend is his dog. Marek’s life is shaken up when he discovers the secret of his lost mother.
The film was selected for the Berlinale Co-production Market in 2010 and was introduced within the Works in Progress presentation of 47th Karlovy Vary IFF as well as the Agora Work in Progress presentation at 53rd Thessaloniki IFF, where it also received the Best Project Award.
The debut of Mira Fornay, Foxes (2009), premiered at the International Critics’ Week of the 66th Venice IFF in 2009 and was also presented at the 39th Rotterdam IFF in 2010.

The feature debut of director Mátyás Prikler Fine, Thanks (2013) was selected for the Bright Future section, where the festival presents up-and-coming new talents. The films is a feature-length film consisting of three main stories, and an epilogue. The stories take place during the current financial crisis that affects the intimate lives of the characters and reveals a harsh picture of their twisted relations. The applied narrative method, which is based on observation and borders on documentary filmmaking, is also the key approach in portraying a world that is losing morals but has not yet lost all hope.
The film was a part of the Work in Progress Arc 1950 Coproduction Village presentation of the 3rd Les Arcs European FF.
The short Fine, Thanks (2009), one of the short stories of the feature film, was selected for the La Cinéfondation at the 63rd MFF Cannes in 2010.
