The Lumière Festival in Lyon is one of the most important events dedicated to showcasing the treasures of world cinema. This year, Slovak cinema has a particularly notable presence in the programme. Recently digitally restored, Birds, Orphans and Fools (1969), directed by Juraj Jakubisko, has been selected not only for the Treasures and Curiosities section but also as one of five films chosen by the organisers for the International Classic Film Market (MIFC). The festival’s 18th edition takes place from 10 to 18 October.

Cinemateca Capitólio in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre is an important cultural and social space that brings the local community together. For the third consecutive time, it will present significant works of Czechoslovak cinema as part of its programme. From September 22 to October 11, it will host a showcase titled Literakino: Between the Words and Images of Czechoslovakia, giving local audiences the opportunity to see a total of seven Slovak feature-length films and three short animated works.

The Slovak Film Institute (SFI) will also present a selection of its films at the 19th International Animation Festival Fest Anča. As part of this year’s programme, the festival will screen a selection of seven short films by Slovak animator, director, screenwriter and artist Vladimír Pikalík, marking the release of the SFI’s new Blu-ray edition dedicated to his work. Moreover, the festival will open with First Class (1984) by Rudolf Urc from the SFI collections, which resonates with this year’s festival theme, FAKE. Fest Anča takes place in Žilina from 30 June to 5 July.

At the 29th edition of the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, a newly published book from the Publishing Department of the Slovak Film Institute (SFI) will be presented. The publication reflects on the work of acclaimed Slovak documentarian Viera Čákanyová. Entitled Human on the Edge of AI with the subtitle The Post-Anthropocene of Viera Čákanyová, it was written by film theorist Jana Dudková. This year’s edition of the MFDF Ji.hlava will take place from October 24 to November 2, with the book launch scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, at 8:00 p.m., before the screening of Čákanyová’s new film Bardo (2025). Both the author of the book and the director will attend the event.
