The Slovak-Czech animation short The Pandas by Matúš Vizár marks great success at the Croisette: awarded with 7.500 €, it received the 3rd prize ex-aequo in the Cinéfondation section at Cannes IFF.

The 53rd IFF for Children and Youth Zlín will present a significant amount of Slovak films. The On a Common Journey section will offer a selection of Slovak films featuring Czech actors and actresses. Two Slovak films are, moreover, included in the competition sections of the festival. This year’s edition will run May 27 – June 1, 2013.

Slovak films continued to be successful during April, as well. At the beginning of the month, My Dog Killer and Lidice received awards at the Titanic IFF, My Dog Killer then “scored” two awards at the Finále in Pilsen, not far away from where Made in Ash was awarded with a Special Mention of the Jury in Linz. The “winning strike” is closing with yet another win for Made in Ash, which by receiving a Special Mention at the Neisse FF successfully leapt into a new month.

Slovak films have a busy spring ahead: during April, they will be presented to audiences at various events – from the 12th Rome Independent Film Festival, 20th Titanic IFF in Budapest, 13th goEast Wiesbaden FF and Disappearing Act V, to the 10th Crossing Europe FF in Linz, 20th IFAF Stuttgart and 20th Hot Docs Toronto.

Slovak films received several interesting awards during March: successful were Mira Fornay’s My Dog Killer, Marek Mackovič’s Okhwan: Mission Impossible and The Exhibition by duo Peter Begányi and Andrej Kolenčík.

The showcase of the Czech and Slovak film in Ljubljana called Hand In Hand: New Czech And Slovak Cinema that will be held from March 28 – April 7, 2013 is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the split of Czecho-Slovakia, as well as to the anniversary of the formation of two independent republics.

On February 21, 2013, the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Washington, DC screened the pioneering film The Sun in a Net (1962) of director Štefan Uher. The screening opened a film series entitled The Golden 60s of Czechoslovak Cinema that was prepared by the Embassies of the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic in the United States.

The 42nd International Film Festival Rotterdam Hivos Tiger Award went to Mira Fornay´s My Dog Killer.

Slovak films started off the New Year very successfully. The 42nd Rotterdam IFF (23. 1. –  3. 2. 2013) included two young Slovak directors’ film in its programme in a world premiere.
