A debut feature OUT by György Kristóf has been selected for the Un Certain Regard at the jubilee 70th edition of Cannes IFF (May 17 – 28, 2017). The road movie of a tall, family man venturing through Eastern Europe in desperate attempt to get a job and fulfil his dream was made in Slovak-Hungarian-Czech co-production.
Atlantis, 2003 student film by Michal Blaško will represent Slovak cinema at the jubilee 70th edition of Cannes IFF (May 17 – 28, 2017). This short film tells the story of a young couple – Martin and Denisija – from Ukraine, who are trying to get illegally to Germany, and will be introduced within Cinéfondation, one of the most prestigious competitions for short films.
The jubilee 30th edition of film festival Finále Plzeň (April 20 – 26, 2017) will once again introduce a significant number of Slovak film titles. Slovak cinema will be showcased not only in the competitive and non-competitive sidebars, but also within the Industry section Czech Film Springboard.
After a succesful first launch last year, the upcoming 24th MFFK Febiofest Bratislava will once again host a second edition of Industry Days (March 7 – 8): a bright new event dedicated to the promotion of local film production as well as to meetings of Slovak and international film professionals.
The 2017 edition of Berlinale has been a success for Slovak films. Spoor by Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik have received the Silver Bear – Alfred Bauer Prize and Little Harbour by Iveta Grófová was awarded the Crystal Bear.
The 29th edition of International Short Film Festival FilmFest Dresden (April 4 – 9, 2017) features several Slovak films within the official programme.
Two Slovak films will be premiered at the 46th edition of prestigious Rotterdam IFF. Bright Future section features Filthy by talented Tereza Nvotová. The festival has also prepared a wide retrospective of the work of Jan Němec including also his last film The Wolf from Royal Vineyard Street.
Year 2017 starts fabulously for Slovak films. One of the early festivals of 2017 – Trieste FF (Jan 20 – 29, 2017) – opens with The Teacher by Jan Hřebejk and presents several Slovak films in their Italian premieres witihin the programme. Moreover, Slovak projects are part of the accompanying industry events.
The Czech National Award Czech Lion, bestowed annually by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA), announced the Nominations from the films distributed in the local cinemas last year.
Czech Lion is awarded in 15 statutory categories (see below). Among the three films with the highest number of nominations are two Slovak co-productions, A Prominent Patient (by Julius Ševčík) and The Teacher (by Jan Hřebejk).
