The Slovak Film and Television Academy (SFTA) has selected Flood by Martin Gonda as Slovakia’s national candidate for the 99th Academy Awards (AMPAS) in the Best International Feature Film category. The selection was announced on 30 July.
An absolute majority of the Slovak film community voted in favour of Martin Gonda’s feature-length debut, which also received the highest number of Sun in a Net Awards for 2025, winning six in total. The selection process was conducted in accordance with the rules established by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
The film Flood is set in 1980, in communist Czechoslovakia. Mara dreams of leaving her village to study in the city and become a pilot. But her father, a Ruthenian farmer and widower, insists she stays and works the land. As their village faces destruction because of a new water reservoir, their generational conflict intensifies, revealing the struggle between tradition, identity, and the desire for freedom against a backdrop of historical change.

The Academy Award nominations will be announced on 21 January 21, 2027, with the 99th Academy Awards ceremony taking place on March 14, 2027.
